Have you noticed how Facebook has the power to take over your brain? Actual thoughts Breakfastare replaced by status updates & comments, emotions become likes and unlikes. You’re so high when you see the blue planet with its red speech bubble attached, the number contained in it reflecting how much you are loved today, right here right now. But oh you go low when the blue planet stands alone. You click your phone off and silently scold yourself for checking too often. You haven’t given your people enough time. But you might just check again in a minute. In the meantime you could read the news, find out what the others are doing. No sign yet. You close the browser to get on with your day, but the reel of what you’ve just read is still being streamed. This is your life online.

For a long while I was a once every now and then kind of girl. I used to be a the kind of user who could go weeks without checking. Then my little i-friend came along & changed things. Now i’m struggling not to check it before breakfast.  I used to feel sorry for people like me! But perhaps it’s because it feels like I’m actually connecting now with real people, real friends, whereas before I felt like I was at the mercy of aquaintances’ breakfast, lunch and dinner updates. Perhaps because I’m putting more in and so getting more out of it. But still, I want to live in the real world sometimes. And the temptation’s right there when I turn off my alarm, a slide away from Facebook brain. We’re always being told to start our day right with a balanced meal. That’s why I prefer to wake up properly and have my breakfast first, to relax out of my dreams and into the day. But it’s not just about breakfast. If you can get up a bit earlier and do the things you love, you will feel like your life is filled with more than just work and the respite of Facebook. Connect with yourself first.

Here are some things to do in the morning to connect with yourself…

  • Journaling
  • Enjoying a cup of tea or coffee in quiet contemplation
  • Writing down your dreams
  • Going for a walk or jog
  • Lying in bed a bit longer and daydreaming or being with your kid(s)
  • Writing down feel good moments from the previous day
  • Having an early morning swim
  • Writing down how you want to feel today

Question : What do you do to start your day right?
